Timed Events

We’re back! Let’s talk about the timed event side!

In this category we have team roping, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, barrel racing, and breakaway roping. This is where it’s you versus the clock; the fastest and cleanest run wins. We’ll go into more depth when we break down each event!

Timed event vocabulary that you should know…

 • Box - The area a horse and rider back into before they make a roping or steer wrestling run.

 • Barrier - A line at the front of the box that the contestant and his horse cannot cross until the steer or calf has a head start, usually marked with a rope and a flag so the timers can see it drop and start the clock.

 • Penalty - A mistake that is made that adds time to your original run time. In timed events, common penalties include 10 seconds for breaking the barrier. In team roping, five seconds for a one-hind-leg catch. In barrel racing, a knocked over barrel will result in a five second penalty as well.

Did you learn something new from this post? We’d love your feedback! What event do you want us to talk about first? Let us know in the comments!
